Torino nightlife: a guide for Erasmus students.

Where to go out in Turin, how a night here actually works, and how to get home. Written by a student who goes out here.

How a night in Torino works

Torino runs later than many northern European cities, so it helps to know the rhythm before your first weekend.

  1. 19:00–21:00
Aperitivo. Torino is the home of vermouth, and aperitivo is a ritual here. Many bars serve a drink with snacks or a small buffet, often for around €8–12. For a student budget it can easily replace dinner.
  2. 22:00–01:00
Bars and piazzas. People meet in a neighbourhood and move between bars, often standing outside in the square.
  3. After 00:30
Clubs. Clubs fill up late. Arriving before midnight usually means an empty dance floor.
  4. Late
Getting home. Plan this before you leave, especially if you live outside the centre. More below.

The main nightlife areas

San Salvario

Busy · student crowd · cheap drinks

Right next to Porta Nuova station, San Salvario has one of the highest concentrations of bars in the city, especially around Largo Saluzzo. It is multicultural, lively and usually the default answer when a group of students cannot agree where to go.

Vanchiglia

Relaxed · near the university · aperitivo

Close to the Luigi Einaudi university campus, Vanchiglia feels more like a neighbourhood than a nightlife district. Piazza Santa Giulia and the streets around it are full of small bars where people sit outside until late. A good place for a first night with new friends.

Quadrilatero Romano

Historic centre · wine bars · aperitivo

The old Roman grid of narrow streets in the centre is where to go for a slower evening: wine bars, cocktail bars and some of the city's classic aperitivo spots. Good for the start of the night.

Piazza Vittorio and the Murazzi

Riverside · big square · clubs

Piazza Vittorio Veneto, one of the largest squares in Europe, opens onto the river Po. Its bars are a classic meeting point, and the Murazzi, the arches along the riverbank below, have long been one of Torino's club areas.

Practical tips

  • Membership cards. Many cultural circles (circoli, often part of the ARCI network) and some clubs only let in members. An ARCI card is usually bought once and valid for the year, and works in circoli across Italy.
  • Bring ID. Venues can ask for it, and you will need it for membership cards.
  • Entry and drinks. Many clubs charge an entry fee that sometimes includes a drink. Some still prefer cash at the door.
  • Local rules. In busy areas the city sometimes limits late takeaway alcohol sales or glass bottles in the street, especially in summer. Signs and bar staff will tell you.
  • Erasmus events. The Erasmus Student Network (ESN) sections in Torino organise parties, trips and welcome events, especially at the start of each semester. A good way to meet people in your first weeks.

Getting home

Torino is walkable, and the main nightlife areas are close to each other. For longer distances:

  • Night buses. GTT, the public transport company, runs night lines on weekend nights. Check the current routes and times on the GTT website or app before you go out.
  • Metro. The metro does not run all night. Check the last departure if you are counting on it.
  • Taxis. Use official taxis from a rank, by phone, or through a taxi app such as Wetaxi.
  • Go together. Leave with the people you came with, and keep your phone charged.
